Invisalign Q & A

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an effective teeth straightening system that uses clear, medical-grade plastic aligner trays to gently guide your teeth to the desired position. The aligners are custom-made to fit your mouth and to move your teeth through a carefully planned transition to the correct positions in your mouth. Invisalign can correct crooked, misaligned, and incorrectly spaced teeth.

Patients of all ages can use Invisalign treatments, although it is a popular choice for adults who want to correct their smiles but are not comfortable with the appearance of metal braces.

What happens during Invisalign treatment?

To fit you with the Invisalign aligners, Dr. Kim takes impressions and pictures of your teeth. He then uses advanced computer programming to determine how your teeth will need to move to reach the correct positions. Once he has planned the alignment path, Dr. Kim sends the details to the dental lab, where your aligners are custom-made for your teeth.

When your aligners are ready, Dr. Kim fits you with your first set of aligners, which you wear for two weeks before switching them out for the next aligners in the series. For the first few changes, you visit the office so Dr. Kim can monitor your progress and to ensure that your experience is going well.

After the first couple of switches, you change your aligners on your own and check in with Dr. Kim every six weeks so he can check on the progress of your treatment and give you the next couple sets of aligners.

What benefits does Invisalign offer compared to other types of braces?

Invisalign is similar to traditional braces as it slowly moves your teeth to a corrected position, but instead of using metal brackets and wires to guide your teeth, it uses custom-designed aligners.

The most popular benefit of Invisalign is that the aligners are more or less invisible. They are made of clear, medical-grade BPA-free plastic. The aligners are also smooth, so they don’t irritate your gums, cheeks, or lips.

A really convenient benefit of the aligners is that they are removable, so you can take them out to eat and to brush and floss. Many patients appreciate this because they can eat what they want and are able to thoroughly clean their teeth — a difficult task with traditional braces. For Invisalign to be fully effective, you should wear your aligners for 22 hours or more each day.
