Dental Implants Q&A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants replace missing adult teeth with permanent fixtures in your jaw. Dental implants are composed of a titanium post that Dr. Kim places in your jaw, an abutment, and a crown. The titanium post acts like a tooth root, stimulating the jaw to promote bone development and strength, while the abutment and crown provide a natural-looking false tooth to correct the gaps in your smile and bite.

Patients often prefer dental implants to dentures because they look natural and are simple to take care of.

How do you install dental implants?

Dr. Kim installs dental implants over the course of four appointments. He uses 3-D cone beam scanning to create an accurate map of your jaw, remaining teeth, and gaps. This map helps him determine the precise placement of the implants to give you the best appearance and support for your jaw.

Once Dr. Kim maps out your treatment, he needs three more appointments to install the implants. During the first of these appointments, Dr. Kim secures the titanium posts in your jaw. Before your next visit, you need to allow time for the posts to bond with your jaw. The posts are made of titanium because the metal’s biocompatibility enables it to fuse with bone.

After the posts settle and your jaw and gums heal, it’s time for your next appointment. During this visit, Dr. Kim fits the abutments, which hold the tooth or teeth, and he takes casts of your mouth so he can have your permanent crowns custom-made. Until your crowns are ready, Dr. Kim provides you with temporary crowns.

At your final appointment, Dr. Kim fits you with your crowns, checks the fit and bite, and polishes your new teeth for a natural shine.

Are dental implants better than dentures?

Each patient has different needs, so Dr. Kim provides comprehensive consultations to determine the best dental solution to meet your needs. Dental implants offer a number of benefits: They support your jaw by stimulating bone growth, they provide a natural appearance, and they’re easy to take care of.
