Braces Q&A

What are braces?

Braces are the traditional method for correcting misaligned or overcrowded teeth. Dr. Yuen attaches metal brackets to your teeth with wires threaded through. By slowly tightening them periodically over several months, he guides your teeth into the correct and desired position. Depending on the severity of your alignment issues, you can expect to wear braces for between 18 and 36 months.

Metal braces have actually been in use since the late 1800s. The technology and practice have evolved over the years, but the basic treatment is more or less the same. Modern braces are more comfortable and efficient than ever before. If you or your child have dental alignment concerns, book online or make an appointment at the Hoover Dental Center for a professional assessment with Dr. Yuen.

How do you apply the braces?

Before putting your braces on, Dr. Yuen provides a comprehensive exam and professional cleaning to make sure you don’t have any pre-existing conditions that he needs to treat first.  When your teeth are clean and dry, Dr. Yuen attaches the brackets with a strong, nontoxic bonding agent. He then threads the wire through the brackets and secures it with elastic bands.

You need to visit the office every four to six weeks so Dr. Yuen can check on the progress of your treatment, as well as tighten and adjust your wires to continue the alignment process. The initial application of your braces takes a couple of hours, but you can expect the follow-up appointments to take only about 20 minutes.

How do I take care of my teeth while wearing braces?

You’ve probably heard that you should brush your teeth after every meal, but it’s especially important while you’re wearing braces. You need to take more care while brushing to make sure that there is no food debris stuck in the brackets or wires.

Dr. Yuen and his staff explain the correct techniques for brushing and flossing while wearing your braces so that you can take great care of your teeth while you’re at home. Since you see Dr. Yuen every four to six weeks, he can diagnose and quickly treat any issues that develop, but it is critical that you practice excellent oral hygiene at home while you wear braces.
